Having a quiet Sunday before another meat grinder of a week.

My cat will sometimes tree them, then they’re so fixated on the cat, I can take them down with the air rifle from close range (more humanely).
I’m normally more of a “live and let live” type of guy (I don’t hunt or even own any firearms) , but I’m pretty zero tolerance on rodents. Especially the ones that invade homes and start fires.

What the hell kind of squirrels do you have roaming around that arson is something you’re concerned about?

That’s a very nice photo. A tiny bit of cropping with an eye toward the rule of thirds, and BAM.

This is what you need. It’s what I’d use. My grandfather -- “Pappy” -- used them. Sounds more like an old school cap going off than a bullet.

Second leading cause of house fires in North America. You virtually can’t keep them out of your house (Eastern US) unless you live in a clear-cut neighborhood. I’ve had pest control people and roofers say there’s no way in...they find a way.
The hawks, cats, and snakes can’t keep up. I’m just doing my part.
I’m not talking about those wussy little squirrels out west, they’re like friendly chipmunks . ;)

Yep, but technically that’s a firearm and I’d be breaking the law. With the larger-grain .177 it still packs a decent punch and stays subsonic to reduce attention.

Right. Not even technically. What range can you use that .177 accurately?

I live in Indiana, I’m no stranger to Eastern squirrels.
I can’t find anything to back up your “2nd leading cause” assertion. Even a website with a vested interest in helping people get rid of pests says this, which is a far cry from that :
Nearly one quarter of fires with unknown causes are believed by experts to be caused by rodent damage.

I meant technically because I’ve also heard air rifles being prosecuted as firearms in some case; with an actual powder charge or even a primer, it’s no doubt.
The gun is supposedly good to 400 yards or so, but I’ve got it sighted in to about 50'-70' based on my backyard.
400 yards would require a tiny round (higher fps) with incredible build quality...you just don’t get that at 1-2 cents/round.

I hope I did not sound like I was trying to troll you; that was not my intent. As carefully as we type, all the nuance of face-to-face talk is lost.
If you can be accurate at 50-70' and have solid mortality results, then the .177 action might be interesting. I bet there are some super-tricked-out models, too.

Nope, I didn’t interpret it that way at all...I was just elaborating on “technically” (like “literally” and “ironically” it’s far too overused...)
I won’t say I’m totally lethal at 50' every time, but it’s hard to tell. Squirrels are so twitchy, then tend to keep running around like chickens even when you place a good shot in the upper torso.
I’ve thought about using 4-5 BBs in the gun as quasi-birdshot, but I don’t want to destroy the rifling. Plus I can’t get crappy BBs to cluster well enough to make them worthwhile.
